Over the last few weeks, I’ve worked with a helper, Jenn Bickel, to fill in the blanks in the catalog of Alice Steer Wilson paintings. We find wonderful slides, entire collections of paintings, waiting to be scanned and dropped into place. We feel we are making progress, nearing completion. Then, randomly, I receive a call such as the one I received on Sunday, August 8th, from my sister-in-law, Maureen Stridick. She had just entered the condo they rented for the week, and found, lurking in an out of the way spot, a full sheet portrait of the building in its previous guise, as the Bed and Breakfast Inn known as “The Columns.” Maureen and daughter Kate were thrilled — they knew and loved my mother — a good omen for their week!
For me, at the end of the week when I was able to visit and photograph the framed painting (above) it was like finding another note from Mom, another instruction. Delightful – but — the painting shows splotches of acid or glue damage, and it needs a new mat. Maureen wanted to buy it, but the owner wasn’t interested in selling.
I suppose it’s inevitable that many paintings will suffer this fate; but also, there are wonderful pristine paintings like the two I picked up from Roman, at Washington Street, the same weekend: pristine, perfect, protected. The original “Jackson Street” and “Mainstay Inn” — wonderful!
OK FOREVER.
